Accidental (adjective): happening by chance, unintentionally, or unexpectedlyHarmony (noun): The combination of simultaneously sounded musical notes to produce chords that have a pleasing effect. Also, the quality of forming a pleasing and consistent whole.
My family and I came up with this name on a car ride one day. If you’ve ever been in our car, you know that it is filled with music of all colors– my husband loudly impersonating the voice of the singer, my daughter, Molly, beautifully humming and singing along (she has the best voice out of all of us) and me, singing proudly off-key. I have the most horrible voice but don’t care and sing aloud whenever I can. On this day in particular, we were singing along to a John Denver tune (classic car ride music!) and I was actually so off key that I had managed to harmonize with my daughter. My husband laughed out loud and said that we sounded great. Molly laughed and said we had created an accidental harmony! And so, my life saga of things going wrong so that they can go right in a different way finally had a name.
I’ve been through a lot in my fifty-something years. Certainly not the life I planned when I was a little girl, but a life better than I could have ever imagined. We are a family who had everything and lost it, a family in recovery, a family that braved ambulance rides and the almost-too-clean smell of hospitals because they loved each other so much. We are a family who survives and pulls together.
In the last five years, I have survived two heart surgeries, two brain surgeries and cancer (I also survived raising two daughters, but that’s another story!). With all that life has thrown at me, it is easy to want to turn my back on God and live a life in negativity. However, I choose to live my life in gratitude. It is cliché, but every day truly is a gift and I am thankful for it because I know how quickly it can change! I intend to use this platform to inspire others to live humbly and gratefully through weekly posts. I hope you will join me on my journey of finding Accidental Harmony in every song I sing.
