The people you meet on vacation………

After being in a funk lately and having serious writer’s block, my mind has been reeling with blog ideas.   As today is March 1st, I thought what a perfect day to begin. Though I never finished it and today is March 2nd.

However, before I get into my normally deep introspective writing, I thought I would write about my recent trip to Cancun.   Being at an all-inclusive resort allows you to look at mankind with a new set of eyes.    Unlike a trip where you tend to meet people once and never see them again, at an all inclusive resort you get to see the same people over and over and get a little insight into who they are.  We named the people we came in contact with.

The Wedding Crasher:   The name is self-explanatory.    At my niece’s wedding, we got a little visitor, the wedding crasher.   He joined right in like he was a member of our family.  As we started dancing The Hora, he joined right in.   Not only that, but he started ordering drinks from the Bartender and eating dessert.  After realizing that people were wondering who the guy in the orange shorts was, he hugged me and headed on his way.   I saw him the next day with his wife and two kids at the pool.   It appeared he had no memory of attending the wedding and clearly his wife had no idea he was going around hugging random women.

The Crazy Lady:  Anyone who knows me knows that I talk to everyone.   I cannot help myself!  So many times I will be out with my girls and I will hear someone talking about something and I will go to say something and my girls will look at me and I just know to be quiet.  I should’ve taken their advice.

While going to dinner one night I just happened to say to someone also waiting for a table, “what a beautiful night.”  Well, the flood gates opened and she started telling us how she was on vacation with her sister in law, how they got into an argument and they left the resort to go home.  She then continued on about how her SIL left her at the airport, she got detained by airport security and was brought to a Mexican jail (I’m doubting at this point the accuracy of this whole story).  She talks her way out of it (would never happen) and grabs a cab back to the resort and checks back in but her SIL went back to the states and she is stuck here with no money.    When I tried to kindly end the conversation she would not shut up.   I finally literally had to turn my back on her and walk away.    I then had to avoid her the rest of our vacation.

For all I know, she could still be there!

The PDA Couple:  This was clearly everyone’s favorite couple at the pool (or the men at least).  Clearly either newly dating or on their honeymoon, this couple had no problems with showing a little explicit PDA.    The adult pool at the resort had big beds with canopies surrounding the pool.   If you were lucky to secure one, it was yours for the day and you could spend the whole day at the pool.   This couple would get there at like 6 a.m and would fall back to sleep (usually one top of each other).   When they woke up a little frisky, they had no problem acting upon it.  Truthfully it was a little graphic.      I cannot tell you the amount of men (and a couple of women) who would casually walk by very slowly trying to make believe they were not looking.  Some would go back and forth a number of times.    I cannot say the nickname we gave them, but suffice to say that whenever we saw them at the resort, we would say “oh look that is the _______couple.”

The Rocker Couple from Canada:  They were without a doubt my favorite couple at the resort.   I could not help but notice them at breakfast.   He had a total musician vibe and she was a total music groupie turned wife.   Turns out he was a pretty successful metal guitarist for a number of different bands in Canada and she had been married to another musician but always had the hots for him.   After years of being friends and following two divorces, they connected and got married within three months.   They have now been married for six years.

I know what you are thinking, yes, I do have a way of getting people’s complete life stories.

They had no interest in anything going on at the resort but hanging by the pool, drinking and relaxing.   They were totally cool and we loved hearing all his stories about his bands.   I am a disco girl but added him to my spotify playlist just because.

And last but not least…………………

The Timeshare Couple:  With my head held down, I am embarrassed to admit I got suckered into doing the “no obligation, it is not a timeshare” just give us an hour of your time presentation.   For 20% off our steak dinner, why not?     Truthfully it was torture and I am still thinking about how much I would rather have had that hour back at the pool than hear the scripted speech about how better our vacation could be if only we became Prestige Vacation members.   For only $189,000 dollars (yes that number is correct) we could become Prestige Vacation Club members and get discounts to only “the best resorts in the entire world.”     It is not a timeshare because unlike timeshares, you pay just one fee upfront and you are a member for twenty-five years.     I was so annoyed at myself for letting myself agree to this, that I let them keep the ugly orange .99 cent shopping bag they were going to give to me as a gift.

So fast forward I am in the pool making small talk as I do and I mention this horrific tour we took for this non-timeshare for $189,000 and the couple turns to me and says “oh we signed up.”   “We have another timeshare in Hawaii and we signed it over to them so we could take advantage of this amazing opportunity.”     I slinked away with my Mango/Tango frozen drink and avoided the timeshare couple the rest of the trip.

In the last five years, I have survived two heart surgeries, two brain surgeries and cancer (I also survived raising two daughters, but that’s another story!). With all that life has thrown at me, it is easy to want to turn my back on God and live a life in negativity. However, I choose to live my life in gratitude. It is cliché, but every day truly is a gift and I am thankful for it because I know how quickly it can change! I intend to use this platform to inspire others to live humbly and gratefully through weekly posts. I hope you will join me on my journey of finding Accidental Harmony in every song I sing.

  1. OMG!!! Love this! How did we miss the PDA couple???
    The others were a hoot!
During this trip, I nicknamed my SIL, the author of this blog, “Mary the Magnet”!
Yes, she magnetizes these people to her! It was hilarious! 🤣🤣
Mary and I share the joy of people watching and socializing with strangers. We met a woman by the pool reading the book “The People You Meet on Vacation” and had to tell her our stories about some of the characters we had met thus far! We could have written that book!
Given that this wonderful blog has a focus on gratitude, I have to say that my daughters wedding made my heart so happy ❤ and spending time with my family and especially my sister Mary filled me with gratitude! 🥰
    To our next adventure sis❣❣
