Welcome to my first blog post (in a while)! For those who have not followed me before and to returning readers alike, welcome to Accidental Harmony!
I started Accidental Harmony as a way to spread grace, optimism, kindness, and gratitude. My life has been nothing short of a roller coaster. “Accidental Harmony” truly encompasses my life because although things never have panned out exactly how I pictured them, they are always better than I ever imagined them to be.
I’m not an expert in much, but you could say I’m an expert in survival. Two open heart surgeries, two brain surgeries, a little splash of cancer, heartbreak, grief – you name it! The world is not done with me yet and I believe there must be a reason that I’m still here. Maybe that purpose is to share a bit of perspective with you.
This past spring I had an unexpected heart procedure and it completely threw me off. I had settled back into the comfort of life after a few years off of the hospital, and it reminded me of the truth I’ve learned all too well – nothing is promised.
A lot of people tell me I’m incredible. That I’m the strongest woman they know. It’s funny because I don’t feel that way. Sure, I’ve made it through some tough times but it wasn’t without a lot of tears and asking “why?”. I guess when these things happen you can either wallow in it or pack it up and figure out how to move on.
In the early 2010s I had two friends battling breast cancer. They were fighting the same fight, living in very similar circumstances, but their outlooks couldn’t have been more different. That really stuck with me.
The first friend, let’s call her Sam, was dying every day. And I don’t mean physically, I mean spiritually. Emotionally. Listen, there’s nothing harder than fighting a battle with your health. If you don’t have your health, you don’t have anything. But our words have a lot of power, and let’s just say Sam was not doing herself any favors with the power of her word.
My other friend, Julie, was living every day. Though she was physically dying, every day was an opportunity, a blessing, a gift. I remember her last birthday cake. It read, “I’m Still Here!”.
Maybe we can’t always change our circumstances and maybe positive thinking can’t magically cure ailments. But if we’re stuck in these less-than-ideal situations, we might as well enjoy ourselves to the fullest extent that we can. Literally, why not?
I loved writing this blog but I had stopped because I didn’t think anyone was really interested. Since then, though, I’ve realized that I am interested. I love writing this blog and it’s a beautiful space for me to share these thoughts that live on my heart and in my mind. Who cares if anyone reads it?
Since we aren’t guaranteed tomorrow I would really like to make use of today. If you’re interested in a regular dose of positivity and perspective, I’m your gal.
“No one is guaranteed tomorrow. We live the day we’re given, enjoy the time we have, and love the people in our life.”
